Introduction

Just as an architect carefully plans how a building will be built, your SEO agency must carefully plan how they are going to implement your businesses SEO.

For example, there’s no point in an SEO agency spending a vast amount of time building high-quality backlinks unless the website has good on-site SEO.

How the SEO consultant know if the business has good on-site SEO?

Well, the SEO consultant will need to undertake what is called an “SEO audit”.

Within this article we will explain what an SEO audit is and why agencies use it to evaluate how good a business’s backlinks are, on-site SEO and the businesses content marketing for example.

Therefore, when you hire a digital marketing agency they should spend a long time about evaluating your businesses SEO.

For example, they should evaluate:

·        Businesses backlinks

·        Content marketing

·        On-site SCO

·        Meta titles

·        Meta descriptions

·        Anchor text

Evergreen content marketing

·        Business citations

·        And much more

Each SEO agency might have a different SEO audit that they carry out

Sometimes some businesses here in Cardiff they may think that all SEO companies will offer the same work, however this is not the case, that’s the say often different SEO agencies will offer different work.

Therefore, when one company says that there will undertake SEO audit, this might not be as detailed as what another company can offer.

Therefore, it’s like a mechanic checking over a car, you might have some mechanics which are diligent which will check everything from the car’s oil levels, right through to making sure that everything is running as it should such as the level of fuel and oxygen mixture.

However, on the other hand you might have a careless mechanic that just does the minimum, this is exactly the same when you are picking a digital marketing agency.

Some will offer a very diligent approach and check everything from the quality of your website backlinks, where some others might not check anything, and go straight into trying to optimise the website which is the wrong approach.

We say the wrong approach because simply put the first thing that your SEO consultant should do is carry out an SEO audit to make sure that there are no penalties on the website and to evaluate how they are going to improve the website.

For example, a marketing agency often only has a set amount of hours that they can spend to improving a business’s SEO every single month.

So, an SEO agency should carry out an SEO audit right at the start, as otherwise they will not know which areas they need to improve, and which areas will bring about the best return in the shortest time unless they carry out an SEO audit.

For example, without an SEO audit often the business will not be able to spot duplicated content marketing.

Now, as a good digital marketing agency will know if the website does has duplicated content marketing then this could hamper the businesses SEO performance, so this needs to be rectified.

Also, if the business has any algorithmic or manual penalty that’s imposed on the site, then this need to be rectified before any further SEO work is carried out.

How will the SEO agency know if there are any algorithmic or manual penalty is imposed on the website? They will need to undertake an SEO audit.

It’s important that the SEO consultant fixes any errors

For example, some agencies might state that they are going to build so many backlinks in the first month, however they should first look at the current backlink profile, and see if these backlinks are of good-quality, as if they don’t they might miss that the website has a penalty imposed on it right from the start.

If the website has a penalty on it right from the start, then this means that the SEO performance is hampered and this needs to be rectified before any further work is carried out.

Backlinks

It’s important that the agency evaluates the quality of the business’s backlinks, and if the website has any penalties imposed that these are rectified.

Therefore, we highly recommend that whichever agency use, that you ask whether they have a backlinks specialist within the agency.

It’s all well and good having copywriters who can write the content marketing, on-site and off-site SEO specialists, you should also have an expert in backlinks as well.

Then they will be able to quickly see if the quality of the backlinks are good, or whether the website possibly has a penalty imposed on the website?

Content marketing

Then our agency often moves onto evaluating the quality of the businesses content marketing, for example if a previous SEO agency has been working on the onsite SEO, and they’ve only added a few blog posts which are just a few hundred words, yet they are poorly written then this will need to be rectified.

That’s because low-quality SEO will hold the website back so this means that be rectified prior to any good quality white hat SEO being applied to the website.

On-site SEO

Evergreen content marketing

Sometimes some businesses in Cardiff will opt for the cheapest web design quote, for example they might ask 10 various agencies for a web design quote, and then opt for the cheapest quote.

However, because they have opted for the cheapest, sometimes there is only say one brief paragraph of text per page, which means that this is not enough for an SEO agency to optimise at a later date, so that’s to improve the company’s SEO.

Therefore, the SEO company will need to evaluate quality of the content marketing

Missing the important details?

Your SEO consultant during the audit will need to ascertain whether important details are missing, such as the businesses NAP information if this is missing then this could hamper the businesses local SEO.

For example, let’s say that you are electrician and you work in Cardiff, and the web designer has not added NAP information to you website then this could hamper your businesses local SCO.

Therefore, the SEO consultant should work through the website and should spot opportunities where they can quickly improve the businesses SEO, sometimes this is adding NAP information to the footer the website or on the contact page.

Need pages

Does your website need new pages?

For example, you might task a Cardiff digital marketing agency with improving your businesses organic SEO, let’s say that you are a plumber and you want to be on the first page for emergency plumber.

However, if you have not got a page on your plumbing website for “emergency plumber” then the SEO agency should explain that is very hard to optimise for this term unless you have a dedicated page for emergency plumber on your website.

Therefore, the agency should recommend that a new page is designed for emergency plumber.

Do you require a Cardiff SEO company?

Often small businesses in Cardiff try to improve their SEO themselves, however if the company implements low-quality SEO and then business could incur a penalty which could mean that it drops down the ranks.

Therefore, sometimes it’s better to leave the work to a white hat and well-known SEO agency like Top Space.

Must be white hat

There are so many companies that offer free seo audit reports, yet you as the businessowner may well be thinking, well what is included in an seo report?

Well its kind of like a garage that sells used cars, where some claim “every car passes a rigorous inspection before we sell the car”- well sure, but what does that entail?

One garage may check over 200 parts of car, and then document what has  been checked, while another may just give the wheels a kick to see if they have air in them- so it really does vary from business to business.

And from our experience this is the same for SEO, that’s to say some businesses may charge for an SEO report that is very detailed, really well written, and written by an SEO expert.

Yet another business may well just use an automated programme that doesn’t tell you much at all, other than it thinks a few meta titles are too long, there’s one or two spelling mistakes, and you could add a H1 tag on a few more pages- well that’s not likely to be much use to anyone.

So of course we cant speak for other businesses, and what they put into their SEO reports, however we can say what we put into ours, and before we go any further, we have to add that we do not offer free reports, the reason being is often an SEO consultant will have to spend many hours if the report is to be done properly, that’s to say we believe that many automated programmes are not a substitute for someone who’s been optimising websites for a very long time, like most of our consultants have.

So, what do our consultants normally report on when we write an SEO report?

Page speed

Does your website take a long time to load? If so, this should be fixed, the reason for this is you have to put yourself in your customers shoes for just a second.

So let’s say they are looking to purchase a new fridge / freezer, your website offers free delivery so this has meant that the customer wishes to purchase from you, so they place the item into the basket.

Yet, when the customer then proceeds to pay for the item, the website then becomes very slow, this may then mean you lose that sale, but not just that, your websites bounce rate may even increase.

So this could mean, if your website is slow, and your bounce rate increases substantially, that your SEO could be negatively impacted.

Content thin?

Is your website content thin?

And what does this even mean?

Well, lets say for example that you run a plumbing business, and you specialise in boiler repair and replacement.

Now to describe your boiler repair and replacement service, you have written 2 lines of text, now is this enough?

Well, no is most like the answer, that’s because when GoogleBot, which is the bot used by Google to crawl and index websites, it will most likely have a vague idea about the service that you offer.

Why would this be the case?

Well, let’s take this is an example:

“We are an established business, we pride ourselves on offering high levels of customer satisfaction, if you require a plumber, then why not call our business today”.

Sure, the word “plumber” is used but does the company mention it can replace boilers in detail?

Compare this with another business, that business has over 500 words of quality information explaining that they can repair or replace your boiler, including an FAQ?

So which business is likely to have better SEO?

Well, business number two, if the seo work is white hat.

Does the business have a blog?

Part of an seo audit should be to see if the company has a blog, if so, how regularly does the business update the blog, and is it well-written?

How well written is the content marketing generally?

The SEO consultant who is writing the SEO report should also look at whether the businesses content marketing is high-quality, or not?

So, what do we mean by this?

Well, does the content marketing offer quality and useful information?

Good onsite SEO?

Has the business managed to implement good onsite seo, and what do we mean by this?

Well, is the following optimised in a white hat way?

·        H1-H6 tags

·        Meta titles and meta descriptions

·        Alt tags

·        Content marketing

·        Anchor text

H1 – h6 tags been used?

Have heading tags been used? If so have the SEO agency optimised the heading tags in a white hat way?

AMP and Schema

Has the marketing company created an AMP version of the site, has the business added Schema?

Duplicated content?

Has the business got duplicated content marketing on the site, so for example, have the business copy and pasted text from another business?

If so, duplicated content could create a penalty.

Design

Is the design good, or could website be improved?

White hat?

Is the work white hat?

How we can help:

If your business requires white hat seo, then why not call us?

Introduction

Okay, so it really doesn’t matter whether you run a large business or a small business, that’s to say it’s safe to say that most businesses would benefit from improving their SEO.

This means that businesses of all sizes based here in Cardiff will be improving their organic SEO.

Within this article we are going to concentrate on how you can improve your businesses onsite search engine optimisation.

As your SEO agency might have already told you, SEO can be broadly split into one of two categories, that is offsite and onsite, an example of onsite SEO would be writing and adding a meta title to a page, and an example of offsite seo would be building a good quality backlink.

Then when Googlebot crawls and indexes this work, if the work is white hat, then it may improve your businesses seo.

Let’s now look at some of the way’s that you could improve your company’s onsite SEO here in Cardiff.

Meta descriptions and Meta titles

What are meta title’s and meta descriptions?

Well, let’s say that your looking to purchase a pair of ice skates, you know the make you want, so you are scanning your eyes down Google’s list of results, so that you can see that make, and if the retailer stocks the ice skates that you are looking for.

Then you see result number three, it has the following description:

Meta title: We stock a range of different ice hockey skates, plus we offer free delivery

Meta description:  Welcome to “company name” we stock a range of different ice skates, including the following “brand name” plus we can deliver the very next day for free.

This is an example of a well written meta title and a meta description, plus it’s a good one, and why do we say that?

Well, it is likely to improve the businesses CTR (Click Through Rate)- and what does that mean?

Well, no matter how hard your digital marketing agency works, your business is always going to be just one business that’s listed in the SERP’s.

If you do not know what “SERP’s” means, well it simply means search engine results pages, so even when your marketing company gets your business onto the first page of Google, well, you still have say 10 other businesses which your company has to compete with in order to get a shopper to visit your company’s website. This is why its so important to have a well written meta title and meta description, which will state what a lot of customers are shopping for, such as a brand of a product.

So sure, the marketing agency may get your business into the number one position, yet if the result in the number 3 position says something that the shopper is looking for, then that might grab their interest.

Such as the exact product they are looking for, plus an offer such as free delivery. So, your marketing agency should spend a lot of time making sure that the meta titles, and the meta descriptions are well written.

This means if the web designers have left the space to put a meta title and meta description blank, well this is a missed opportunity. Your business here in Cardiff, or your marketing company should write the meta title and meta description, this may only take a few minutes per page, however all of the SEO work must always be white hat.

White hat- so what do we mean by that?

Well, you should write as if you are trying to encourage the shopper to visit your website, don’t just cram the meta title, and meta description with loads of different brands, or offers, as if they click on that page, and it doesn’t offer what the shopper wants, then the businesses bounce rate is likely to increase, and this could adversely affect the businesses seo over the long run.

So, do adhere to white hat seo methods.

And your marketing agency should also aim to reduce your company’s bounce rate.

What is content marketing?

Are you adding blog posts to your website, but your SEO does not seem to be improving much?

Well, here’s the thing, so many SEO agencies offer local SEO, yet they do not get the content marketing right.

What do we mean by this?

Well, some digital marketing agencies still think that if they write the content marketing to improve the businesses SEO, and not focus on offering useful information to your customers, that this will improve the businesses SEO, however Google’s algorithm is far too sophisticated for a marketing agency to be writing content marketing that is just aimed at improving where a business ranks.

Content marketing is simply written text, like this blog post.

So for example, lets say your business sells winter jackets, now if your SEO company just keeps writing articles that mention “winter jackets” and “winter coats” repeatedly, well guess what, this is not going to improve the businesses SEO.

However, if the company hires a respected digital marketing agency, like Top Space to write an article which explains the latest fashion styles when it comes to winter jackets, and which options would be best for this winter, well, this is likely to do much better.

So when writing content marketing, we always think that you should follow the following rules:

·        Must be white hat

·        Must be useful, so does it answer the shopper’s question?

·        Must be well-written

·        Should include some links to show where the information was obtained

·        White hat anchor text

·        Meta title and meta descriptions

·        Should have a word count that exceeds 1000 words

New pages

Does your business need new main pages to be added?

So, this is a really basic question, but sometimes a business will hire a web design business, and they will offer a really cheap web design quote, but that’s on the basis that the site may only have a few pages.

But as any good SEO consultant will tell you, its important that each main service that the company offers, has its own page.

For example, lets say that your company sells bikes, you should have one page for mountain bikes, one for electric bikes, and one for say racing bikes.

This so when GoogleBot crawls and indexes that page, it can read a meta title, meta description, alt tag, content marketing, anchor text that are all written to describe that one set of products.

If you were to instead have all racing bikes, mountain bikes and electric bikes all grouped together, without any way of sorting the items, or having the bikes on their own page, then it could make the SEO company’s job harder to optimise the website for the separate terms, such as “electric bikes”.

So, for example let’s say that you run a plumbing business, we would recommend that there’s one page for the boiler repair, one for boiler replacement and another then for emergency plumbing.

Then your SEO agency can add the following to each page:

·        Title

·        H1-H6

·        Meta title

·        Meta description

·        Alt tags

·        Content marketing

·        Internal backlinks

Internal backlinks

Is your business using internal backlinks? Your business should use write the anchor text in a white hat way.

Make sure your website can be indexed

Can your website be indexed, or is the “no-index” button on? To check this you should speak to your website designer.

How our SEO company can help:

If you run a business within Cardiff and need help to improve your company’s SEO? Then why not call us?

Introduction

If you run a local business, then it’s highly likely that you would like that business to rank on the first page of Google.

The only problem with that is often many hundreds, if not thousands of over businesses also want to rank the first page of Google as well.

This means that most businesses face constant competition that they have to compete with.

This is why a lot of businesses will have partnered with a white hat SEO agency, so that white hat work can be implemented every single month.

It’s fair to say that where a business ranks on Google may change every single day.

That’s to say a business may well be on the first page of Google today, but it could be overtaken by another business the very next day, this is why businesses are in constant competition, and need to partner with a white hat agency in order to constantly improve the businesses search engine optimisation.

Within this article we are going to explain what local Seo is and how a business may benefit if it was to invest in white hat work.

Google’s Webmaster Guidelines

Whichever business that you choose to implement SEO for your company, or if you decide to improve your search engine optimisation yourself, you should always follow Google’s Webmaster guidelines.

If your business does not follow Google’s Webmaster guidelines, then your business could incur an algorithmic or a manual penalty.

It’s therefore really important that your business implements high-quality white hat work, and that you also follow Google’s Webmaster Guidelines.

If a business does not follow Google’s Webmaster guidelines, it is possible that the business will incur a penalty, for example a business may incur a link penalty if it was to build backlinks in an incorrect way.

An example of a link penalty would be a Google Penguin penalty.

This is why it’s so important that you choose the right agency and that you also follow Google’s Webmaster guidelines.

If you are optimising your company’s website for another search engine, it’s important that your marketing agency or your business also follows that search engines guidelines as well.

Why all work must be white hat

As earlier mentioned, it’s really important that all work is white hat, it’s fair to say that it can take a long time to see results through organic and local Seo. What we mean by this is in highly competitive industries, it can sometimes take many months if not years to see results.

This is why some businesses think that they do not have the time, or the financial resources to wait so sometimes they will be willing to cut corners, however, this often results in an algorithmic or a manual penalty being imposed upon the website.

If the business does incur an algorithmic or a manual penalty, then this can mean that the business will drop in terms of where it ranks. It can also mean that it can take a very long time for the website to recover form an algorithmic or a manual penalty, it’s not uncommon for a business to take many months if not years to recover from a penalty, this is why it’s so important that the work is white hat and of a high quality.

Don’t over optimise

Another common problem that some businesses encounter is that they try to implement SEO themselves and then over optimise the website.

This means that the search engine optimisation has been done to a level where it has triggered an algorithmic or a manual penalty.

For example let’s say you run a skip hire business, you may have mentioned “skip hire” and the name of the few areas too much, that’s to the level where the website is now deemed as having low quality SEO so therefore the business may have incurred an algorithmic or a manual penalty.

It is far better to offer information on your company’s website, that will help your customers, that’s to say, to answer questions that your customers normally would ask your business.

Therefore if you are over optimising your website, by for example adding too much text for words that you want your business to rank for, for example “skip hire” plus a name of the city too much, then this could over optimise the website, and it could result business going down the ranks and not up the ranks.

Therefore, a website should not be over optimised, it should follow Google’s Webmaster Guidelines and also with you to white hat SEO.

Google’s algorithm

If your business wants to improve its SEO, then it must improve what are called “ranking factors”.

Ranking factors are everything from backlinks, right through to meta descriptions.

It’s fair to say that not all ranking factors are worth the same, for example high-quality backlinks from a high-quality website, such as the BBC, will improve your SEO more than say changing the meta descriptions on your website would.

This means that different ranking factors are weighted slightly differently, this means that in order for your marketing agency to improve your businesses search engine optimisation, your agency will need to concentrate on the more important ranking factors.

However, there are over 200 different ranking factors, this means that a marketing agency will often work on improving many different ranking factors every single month.

Also, your competitors will most likely be improving their ranking factors as well, this means that your business is in constant competition with your competitors, so you will be competing for which business can obtain the strongest ranking factors.

The businesses with the strongest ranking factors will be ranked on the first page of Google, however it’s also worth bearing in mind that Google algorithm will take into account over 200 different ranking factors.

For example, your business backlinks are just one ranking factor, your business may need thousands of good quality backlinks.

Another ranking factor will be the quality of your businesses content marketing and also the on-site Seo such as meta titles, meta descriptions.

Therefore, there is a lot of SEO work that needs to be done for most businesses, also if a competitor has been investing for a very long time, and your business is just starting to invest in SEO, then it may take a very long time to catch up with the established competition.

Also, Google’s algorithm will roll out updates, this can change where a business is ranked on Google. Also, it’s worth bearing in mind that even when a business does get onto the first page of Google, this does not mean that it will stay there forever.

The very next day if a business has stronger SEO than your company then that business may move up the ranks and your business may move down.

This is why SEO is a constant process, and most organic SEO agencies charge per month.

Google Algorithm Updates

Earlier we mentioned about Google algorithm updates, if the business was to implement low quality SEO this is often when a business will move down the ranks will be penalised if it is not follow Google Webmaster guidelines.

Therefore this is why we stress it so important to follow Google guidelines, because when a algorithm update is rolled out, such as the Google Penguin updates a lot of businesses were penalised because they did not use the right SU methods.

This is why it’s worth keeping in mind that when you implement SEO should implement high-quality work which is white hat and follows Google Webmaster guidelines.

Some businesses may succeed in getting onto the first page of Google, but if the SU methods use of correct, for example are not white hat the business could be penalised.

It’s also worth mentioning again that once a business is penalised, through something like Penguin update, it may take the business a very long time to recover. Also sometimes a specialist marketing agency that specialises in penalty recovery might be needed and this may mean that the business needs to pay more to have a specialist remedy the problem that has been caused by a Google penalty.

That’s the say some businesses will hire specialists that personalise in helping a business to recover from a penalty, so this can sometimes mean that some businesses will take a very long time to recover plus also the added expense of hiring a specialist agency to help the business recover from the penalty

This is why we always think it’s better to use white hat methods and follow Google’s Webmaster guidelines.

Fluctuations

The business may rank at the top of Google today, but within a few hours or a few days the business may have moved down again, so is also worth keeping in mind that businesses do move up and down Google ranks very frequently.

This is why a lot of businesses use Google analytics and other tools as well as Google search console to to analyse where the business ranks plus also how many visitors the website is getting, but often this is done over the course of the month as looking at one day in isolation of does not provide enough data to ascertain where the business ranks.

concentrate on offering quality SEO

Therefore before we go into recommending different ways in business might wish to implement SCO we words recommend that the business concentrates on offering quality SU.

We are now going to explain different ways that the business could implement white hat SCO in order to help its business improve its SCO

Onsite SEO

Search engine optimisation can broadly be split into two categories, they are on site and also off-site search engine position

An example of on-site SEO would be to improve the business and example of off-site SCO would be to build high quality back links.

It’s also worth remembering that Google’s algorithm is thought to take into account 200 different ranking factors, so the 200 signals can roughly be split into on-site and off-site SEO quite often a marketing agency will need to improve the businesses on site and also off-site SCO if it is to get the business onto the first page of Google.

For example, a business may need to build many high quality back links, but also work on improving the businesses on-site SCO adding content marketing to the website as well.

Meta titles and meta descriptions

we would recommend that a meta title and the meta description is added to each page of your website. For those that do not know what a meta title and the meta description is there simply a title and a short description that describes what that page is about.

For example, let’s say you are looking to purchase a new sofa online, and you asked Google to find you a business that sells leather sofas locally.

In the results you may have pay per click results right at the top of the screen, then a list of local businesses next to a map, these businesses are called Google my business listings.

Then the majority of the results what are called organic business listings, there are over 10 businesses not listed here. Next to the name of the company will be a title and the meta description that briefly describes what that page is about. For example the title may need that the company is an established business and sells a certain make of leather sofa.

Then the meta description a more lengthy description of that page is offered, for example the company stocks leather sofas and can also deliver the next day for free for example.

Then it is the marketing agency’s job to write a good meta title and meta description to encourage the shopper to click on the business. It’s worth bearing in mind that even when a search engine Optimisation has got your business onto the first page of Google, you still have to compete with the other businesses in order to get the shopper to click on your business.

Some marketing agencies refer to this as improving the businesses click through rate.

For example the marketing agency may rewrite the meta title and meta description so that brands of so far included in the meta title and meta description with people are searching for.

When a shopper therefore sees it you stop that brand of sofa may be more likely to click on your company when compared to competitors business. Therefore the marketing company may have succeeded in improving the businesses click through rate.

This is why it’s so important that the marketing agency carefully rights the businesses meta titles and meta descriptions, as it can encourage a shopper to click on your business. We would recommend that a meta title and the meta description is added every page on your website and every blog post as well.

We would not recommend that meta titles and meta descriptions are copy and pasted repeatedly, instead a unique meta title and meta description should be added to every single page on your website.

Alt text

let’s say for example that you run an e-commerce shop, let’s say that you sell electrical items such as televisions, fridge freezers, electric ovens, you should therefore add alt text to each picture of the products that you sell.

For example you may add a description of the product such as brand and what the item is such as the electric cooker.

This can help to improve the businesses search engine optimisation, as it is another signal that will tell Google’s algorithm what that page is about, for example that you are selling electric cookers. People may actively search for that brand of electric cooker, and when they do you will have improved your on-site SCO by labelling your alt text is an electrical and background.

H1-H6

If you are writing a particularly long blog post few business, then we recommend using page 1 through to heat six tax stop

For example let’s say that you are writing a particularly long blog post reviewing different model cars you may wish to split the blog post by labelling heats ones to heat six tax, which mention different vehicle manufacturers name. This is another way of improving your on-site SCO if this is done in a white hat when

Internal backlinks

We would then recommend is using internal back links to help your shoppers navigate you website much more easily. For example let’s say that you sell furniture, when somebody has looking to purchase a table, you may add internal link of that page 4 the shopper to follow the link to view various chairs that your company offers.

This is a way of helping your shoppers to navigate your website, as you know somebody who purchases a table from your business is also likely to purchase chairs from your business, so by adding an internal link or links to various chairs that you sell, you may be helping your shoppers also purchase products from your website more easily.

Also if you are writing a particularly long blog post, and let’s say you were talking about how to achieve a certain interior design look within your home, you may mention certain products that are featured in the picture that you sell, and offer internal links pages so that the reader of that article may then go on to purchase for example a sofa that is shown within the picture.

It is important to label the anchor text in the white hat way, and when adding internal backing stew website to follow Google’s Webmaster guidelines.

NAP

It’s really important to add NAP details onto your website, those that do not know NAP simply means name of your business, the businesses address, and also the businesses phone number

We would highly recommend that you use a local phone number. You should add the NAP details onto the contact page on your website plus also also recommend that the NAP details are also added to the foot of your website as well

It’s really important if you are looking to improve your business is local SEO that you add NEP details onto your website, as this will inform Google’s algorithm as to where your business is based and also the phone number. Your inner AP details should match all of your businesses citations, that’s the say that all of your business citations should match your website NEP details.

It’s also important that the NAP details can be indexed, but the say that they should be written in plain text so that they can be indexed by Google’s algorithm.

Introduction

Most businesses these days have a website, yet having a company website is pretty useless unless people are visiting and making orders via your website.

This is where local SEO can help, and this is normally where the business will need the help of a digital marketing agency like Top Space which is based in Cardiff, South Wales.

Each agency will have their own process for how they can improve a business’s local seo, in this guide we will explain some of the methods that our agency uses, and how we have placed many businesses on the first page of Google’s results.

What does “Local SEO” mean?

Okay, so let’s say you’re a bit hungry, and you want to order a tasty pizza, so you ask Google “find me a local pizza take-away” shop-and then on your smartphone you get a list of local businesses.

At the top may well be PPC (Pay Per Click) adds, then a picture of a map, and it will list businesses that are local to you here in Cardiff.

Those businesses that appear next to a map, they are called the “Google My Business” results, then you should have a long list of businesses, normally 10 businesses, these will be the organic business results.

Now it depends on which type of SEO you want your business to improve for, that’s to say do you want your business to appear in the Google My Business results? The organic results, or perhaps both set of results?

Most businesses here in Cardiff want to appear on the first page of Google’s results- however this is often a highly competitive space, so to get a business onto the first page the marketing agency must work hard, plus once the business is placed there, they are not guaranteed to stay there for any length of time.

That’s to say a business may well be ranked number one in the organic results for “local pizza take away” yet then the next day they may have moved down say four places, so this is why organic seo and local seo often need a monthly investment to improve the businesses seo on an ongoing basis.

Why is local SEO an ongoing process?

There are over 200 different ranking different factors, this means that Google’s algorithm is looking at how strong your business is across 200 different SEO factors, if a business was to beat your company’s standard of SEO, then your business would move down, and the other business up.

Now, this constant reshuffling of where a business is ranked does not happen say once a month, or once a week, no it can sometimes happen multiple times a day.

That’s to say Googlebot will spot that a direct competitor has stronger SEO than your business, it will then move your business down, this is why a lot of businesses hire an agency, like us, to constantly work on improving where the business ranks.

What does onsite SEO mean?

SEO can be very broadly split into one of two categories, they are onsite and offsite SEO, an example of onsite seo would be improving the businesses meta titles and meta descriptions, and an example of offsite seo would be building high-quality backlinks.

So onsite seo means improving the ranking factors which are onsite, such as improving:

·        Meta titles

·        Meta descriptions

·        Alt text

·        Anchor text

·        Internal backlinks

·        Content marketing

What does offsite SEO mean?

Offsite seo simply means trying to improve the ranking factors which are offsite, such as business citations (NAP) and building high-quality backlinks.

Later on in this article we will explain that not all ranking factors are worth the same, for example if you were to write meta titles and meta descriptions for your website, these are not worth the same as say earning 10 high quality backlinks, as some seo ranking factors are worth more than others.

This is why an agency must work hard to dedicate their time on which ranking factors will make the most difference, that’s to say there’s no point in paying for 10 hours of SEO per month, and for the agency to only be working on a ranking factor which is rather unimportant, instead they should dedicate their time to working on improving the ranking factors which will improve the businesses seo the most.

What are ranking factors?

There are thought to be over 200 ranking factors, these range from backlinks right through to a meta title.

As most agencies will tell you, these ranking factors differ in terms of how important they are, for example if your business was to have say 100 good quality backlinks, which are relevant to your company, then these are likely to improve your seo.

However, if an agency was to spend their time just adding alt text, well this is unlikely to make a significant improvement to the businesses seo, so what the business must do is to make sure that the agency is working on the areas which are mostly likely to bring the best return.

All work should be white hat, and the work should follow Google’s Webmaster Guidelines, this means that if the business was to use low-quality seo, then the business could incur a penalty.

This is why your business should only invest in white hat seo, but also the agency must follow Google’s Webmaster Guidelines, and this means that the work will often take a lot of time and effort.

Some businesses will expect to see results overnight, but for organic and local seo, it often takes many months before a business can see an improvement. This is why if any business was to over promise, or say that something is obtainable when many other company’s are stating that it will take longer, the business must make sure that they are obtaining white hat seo, as if the work is low-quality then the business will incur a penalty.

What are the different ways a business could improve its onsite SEO?

There are many different ways that a business could improve its onsite seo, below our SEO consultants have listed a number of ways that we would improve a business’s onsite seo.

Meta titles and meta descriptions

So, let’s say that your looking to purchase a new mountain bike, yet you know the brand of mountain bike that you want, and you are now looking for a company that stocks that brand.

So you simply ask Google, “mountain bike + brand of bike” and Google then shows a few local businesses which are next to a map, these are the Google My Business listings, then it will show what us SEO consultant’s call the organic business results, there are normally 10 businesses which show in the organic business results.

Now, one business may standout, that’s because in the SERP’s (Search Engine Results Pages) it states the make of the bike, plus then that the company offers free home delivery) now this has caught your interest.

Our agency would therefore say that is an example of a well-written meta title, and meta description, now you might say well, what does “meta title” and “meta description” mean?

It simply is the title and few lines of text that are shown in the SERP’s to describe what that page is about.

So for example, the meta title and meta description could simply be:

Meta title: We stock this brand of mountain bike, we also offer next delivery

Meta description: Here at “name of business” we have been selling bikes for over 14 years, we stock “name of brand” mountain bikes, plus we offer free next day delivery.

Your agency should spend quite a bit of time writing meta titles and meta descriptions for each page, as if the meta title and meta descriptions are not well written, the business may have a low click through rate.

Equally if the agency does not write the meta titles and meta descriptions correctly, and the meta titles and meta descriptions do not describe that page, then the shopper may click the meta title, then find its not say the mountain bike that they were looking for, and the business may obtain a high bounce rate.

This is why your agency should optimise your businesses meta titles and meta descriptions. For example, lets say someone is looking for a brand, or a model number of lets say a new T.V, there will be 10 other businesses in the organic business results, so if your business can standout, that’s by stating that you stock that brand of T.V or model of T.V then your business may improve its CTR.

Homepage

It’s especially important that your homepage is well-designed, we say this because if the homepage has say a main menu that’s difficult to use, lets say on a smartphone its difficult to use because the drop-down menu offers so many different options, well, this may mean that the business incurs a really high bounce rate.

A high bounce rate could negatively effect the businesses seo, so a marketing agency should work with a web design company to make sure that the homepage is well designed, and that the business is reducing its bounce rate.

H1-H6

Lets say you are writing a rather long blog post, as you own a law practice here in Cardiff, and there’s recently been a major update to say employment law, so you want to write a long blog post, now if the blog post is one solid block of text, then this might well be off-putting to a reader.

So often an agency will use H1 to H6 titles to split the text up, also many agencies use H1 to H6 titles as they can tell Googlebot what that page is about.

So for example, lets say you are selling men’s clothing, if you were to use H1 to H6 titles, with titles such as men’s shirts, men’s tie’s, men’s formal shoes, it would be obvious to Googlebot what that page is about, and that your company sells men’s clothing.

Ever Green Content Marketing

Your marketing company should spend a long time writing the evergreen content marketing for your website, that’s because the evergreen content marketing is the text that’s placed on pages on your website which are often the most read.

So for example, lets say you sell insurance products, such as home insurance, pet insurance and car insurance, the text that’s placed on each page, to sell your insurance products will often be read the most, so this is why the marketing agency should take a long time to write the text, this is so that you are able to reduce the company’s bounce rate, and also to encourage customers to purchase from your business.

If the evergreen content marketing is not written that well, that’s to say that each page only has say 2 lines of text to describe each service that the company offers, well the companies website may have a very high bounce rate.

Plus, Google’s algorithm may deem the website to have “content thin” pages, which can also be another reason why a website is not ranking on the first page of Google.

Internal backlinks

Okay, so lets say that your business sells many thousands of different products, and lets say that your business sells men’s clothing- now each week your business may publish a blog post, that’s to say a blog post which states items of clothing that are in fashion, for example, one week the business may write a blog post which states what the businesses best selling winter jackets are.

Now, the author of the work may include an internal backlink then to the page on the website that sells that winter jacket. This can help to improve the businesses sales, as someone may then purchase the jacket after reading the blog post, but also it will help Googlebot to crawl and index the website.

Now, you might be thinking, well how would internal backlinks, with anchor text such as “winter jackets” help Googlebot to crawl and index more pages on the company’s website.

Well, that’s because Googlebot follows backlinks, so if you publish a blog post that has say 10 links to various winter jackets that your business sells, then Googlebot can then crawl and index those jackets, and if a page has not been indexed, it will then be indexed, and therefore will show in Google’s results.

NAP

If your business here in Cardiff wants to improve its local SEO, then the business must have NAP information written on its website.

You may now be thinking, well what does NAP even mean?

Well, NAP simply means name of the business, the businesses addresses and the businesses phone number.

Now if the NAP information was added to the footer of the website, plus also the NAP information was written on the contact us page, and the NAP information could be crawled and indexed by Googlebot, then this can help to improve your businesses local seo.

We would recommend that your business uses a local phone number, as opposed to using a mobile number. If you are looking to improve your local SEO in Cardiff, we would recommend you use a local number, for example a number starting with 029 21 or 029 20.

We would then start to build business citations for our customers, we would recommend that the business builds business citations in a white hat way. The business citations must all match, the information must match with your website, that’s to say all of the NAP information must be kept consistent.

Bounce rate

If your business has a high bounce rate, and you can check this using Google Analytics, then we would recommend that your web designer and your marketing agency aim to reduce the businesses bounce rate.

We would recommend that the business tries to keep its bounce rate as low as possible, for those that do not know what bounce rate means, it simply means the percentage of visitors to a website that leave without visiting more than one page.

Now if your selling thousands of different products, and someone lands on a section of your company’s website that sells coffee machines, well, if they don’t look at more than one coffee machine, then it might be due to the design of the website, and the SEO could need improving also.

As that shopper may land on another website, see a coffee machine, then start looking at say 20 more coffee machines before they make a purchase, so if a website is loosing customers,  that’s because they are bouncing off the website before making a purchase, then the business and its marketing agency should make some improvements to the businesses seo and also the design of the website  may also need improving.

For example, the web designer may add a feature which simply states, if you like this coffee machine, well why not check-out these other coffee machines as well?

This means that the business should be aiming to reduce its bounce rate.

That’s to say the business is aiming

Schema mark-up

Your agency should add schema mark-up to your company’s website, most agencies use schema to mark-up the businesses NAP information, NAP simply stands for name of the business, the companies address and the company phone number.

You may well be thinking, well how will schema help my business to improve its SEO?

Well, if you mark the NAP information using schema, this will tell Googlebot that this is your businesses NAP information, and this help your company’s NAP information to standout.

This is important, as on some homepages for example there will be a lot of text, and a lot of coding using HTML and CSS, so you would be helping Googlebot out, that’s by clearly highlighting that this is the businesses NAP information.

And if you were to ask any digital marketing agency how important NAP is, they are likely to say very important.

NAP information is so important, because it states where the business is based, and without it, the businesses SEO is likely to be ineffective, that’s because Googlebot will not know where the business is located, so cannot show it in the local business results.

So, for example, let’s say that your business sells take-away pizza’s, and let’s say the web designer has placed the company’s address in a map, that’s a picture that’s on the contact us page of your website.

Googlebot may well find it difficult to crawl and index the businesses NAP information, which means that when someone looks for a local pizza take-away shop in say Cardiff, your website may never appear.

Then compare this to another business, this business has the company’s name, address and phone number written in the footer of the website, this can be indexed, as the text is written in plain text.

Then the business has also added the company’s NAP information to the businesses contact us page, and the web designers have added Schema mark-up, and also the company has placed its address on the homepage.

This means that Googlebot knows the company’s NAP information, so this business is much more likely to rank higher than the business that has not got NAP information correctly written on its website in order for it to improve its SEO.

Blog posts

In order to improve a businesses seo, the business should add quality content marketing to its website on a regular basis. So for example, if you own a law practice, the business may ask its solicitors to write a blog post every week, this will improve the businesses seo, if the work is high quality.

Use a local phone number

We would recommend that the business uses a local phone number for its company’s NAP information.

So for example, if you run a business in Cardiff, we would recommend that you use a 029 21 or a 029 20 phone number, rather than using a mobile number.

We always recommend to businesses that they use a local phone number, as some digital marketing agencies believe that this is an SEO ranking factor, meaning that if you use a local phone number, then this can help to improve your businesses local seo.

However, the local phone number must match the city or the town where you want to improve your businesses seo, so for example, if you were wanting to improve your local seo in Cardiff, you would need an 029 21 or an 029 20 number.

Can the site be indexed?

This is a crucial point, there’s no point in trying to improve the businesses onsite seo unless that work can be indexed by Googlebot and Google’s algorithm.

So what do we mean by this?

Well, sometimes when a web design company is building a website, they will add code so that the website cannot be indexed (no-index), or on some CMS settings, such as on WordPress, you can sometimes switch on an option which allows the “no-index” tab to be switched on, this means that the website will not show in Google’s results.

Now obviously this is not what is wanted if your trying to improve your SEO!

Sometimes the no-index option is used because the company is redesigning their website, so they don’t want the site indexed until its finished, but obviously if its left on by mistake, when the business is trying to improve its local seo, then this will mean that the business will not appear in the SERP’s.

So one of the first tasks your agency must do is to make sure that your website can be indexed, and that all no-index tabs are switched off.

Content marketing

Well written

Your website should have content marketing which is well written.

So for example, lets say that your business sells bathroom items, such as toilets, baths and shower enclosures.

The content marketing should be well written, and what do we mean by well-written?

·        No duplication

·        Written by an expert

·        Should include onsite SEO

·        Must be white hat

Remove duplication

The marketing agency should remove any duplicated content marketing, often a business will have duplicated text if it sells products.

For example, a business may sell a brand of furniture, and the business may copy and paste the description for the furniture from the furniture makers website, however this will cause duplication issues.

Our agency recommends that all duplicated content marketing is removed from the website, that’s because if a website has duplicated text then this could cause a penalty. For example, it could cause a Google Panda penalty.

Google Analytics, time on site, bounce rate and pages that may need to be redesigned

Often an agency would work with a web designer, that’s so that the web designers can make improvements to the website, sometimes using what is called “A/B” or “split testing”- this way the agency can make improvements to the businesses website in order to reduce the company’s bounce rate.

Most agencies, including ours use Google Analytics to make sure that we are reducing the businesses bounce rate, plus also increasing how long shoppers are spending on the company’s website.

Offsite SEO

Now that we’ve covered onsite seo, its now time to switch to offsite seo, in this section we will be talking about business citations, NAP information, building high quality backlinks, plus also how a business should follow white hat seo.

What are Backlinks?

If you were to ask a digital marketing agency what they think is the most important ranking factor, and do keep in mind that there are over 200, most businesses would say that backlinks are still one of the most important ranking factors.

This means that many marketing agencies think that Google’s algorithm deems backlinks as the most important ranking factor.

Yet, with that said, some businesses may believe that all backlinks are worth the same, when they are not.

Some backlinks will be high-quality, which will help to improve a businesses seo, however some will be low-quality and could damage a business’s seo.

So, when a business builds backlinks, the backlinks must be high-quality and built in a white hat way.

If the backlinks are not built in a white hat way and the backlinks are low-quality then the business could incur a link penalty. An example of a link penalty would be a Google Penguin penalty, this could mean that the website drops in terms of where it ranks, or the website could be removed from Google.

Some businesses falsely believe that they can recover from a penalty in a matter of day’s or weeks, however this is often not the case, if a business was to incur an algorithmic or a manual penalty, then this can mean that the website drops in terms of where the company ranks, plus it may take a very long time for the business to recover as well.

Build white hat backlinks

We would strongly recommend that a business only obtains high-quality backlinks, and we recommend that a business earns links, and never buys backlinks. If a business was to buy backlinks, then the business may incur a link penalty.

Now why’s this important in terms of SEO?

How can they help to improve your businesses SEO?

Often the businesses which rank at the top of Google will have good quality backlinks. If the business operates in a highly competitive business sector, let’s say for example that the business sells electrical items, such as fridge / freezers, then the business that’s ranked at the very top of Google’s results will often have hundreds if not thousands of good quality backlinks.

If a business has say thousands of good quality backlinks, then this can help to improve the businesses local SEO.

The reason for this is if the business has thousands of good quality backlinks, then these backlinks will pass link equity. Google’s algorithm will notice that the business has high-quality links, and will often move the business up the ranks.

However, if the business was to have low-quality links, then the business will move down the ranks.

Why your business only requires high-quality backlinks?

So many businesses make the mistake that if they have more backlinks, that this will help to improve the company’s SEO.

However, with that said, what it all boils down to the quality of the backlinks, that’s to say its about having a high number of high-quality backlinks.

If the business was to obtain low-quality backlinks, then this will mean that the businesses rankings will fall.

So its not about how many backlinks your website has, its about the quality of those backlinks.

What is the Google Penguin penalty?

Many businesses have obtained a Google Penguin penalty, which has meant that many businesses have seen their website removed from Google.

Its worth remembering that sometimes it can take a very long time for a business to recover from a penalty.

What do-follow backlinks mean?

Do-follow backlinks will pass link-equity, this means that if a high-quality website, such as The Guardian newspaper was to link to a website, this would be a high-quality link.

However, as most digital marketing agencies will tell you, most businesses should have a good mix of no-follow and do-follow backlinks.

What do no-follow backlinks mean?

No-follow backlinks do not pass link equity, however as we mentioned earlier some agencies will want to earn no-follow backlinks as a business should have a mix of do-follow and also no-follow backlinks.

And what do we mean by earnt?

Backlinks should be earnt, our agency never recommends that a business buys backlinks, as this often results in the company incurring a link penalty.

What is much better is if the company earns backlinks, and what do we mean by that?

Well lets say that your business sells luxury cleaning products for sports cars, now if you were to hire the wrong SEO agency, then they may recommend that “sports car cleaning products”- is written across meta titles, meta descriptions and the content marketing, which would be the wrong way to implement seo if the company was to mention these phrases too much, as it could be considered to be “keyword stuffing”.

So what a good agency, like our company would recommend instead is that your website offers high-quality advice to your customers.

And what do we mean by high-quality advice?

Well, we simply mean adding content marketing which your customers will find useful, for example you may write the following blog posts:

·        How to remove paint chips from your paint

·        How to wax your car ready for winter

·        How to remove light dents from a door panel

Now these are questions that people who own sports cars might what to find answers to, and also people who own sports cars may link to this work, which means that the business could obtain more backlinks.

If the backlinks were of good quality, then this could help to improve the businesses seo. However, the backlinks will have been earnt, and what we mean by that is the people and businesses who have linked to the website selling car waxes and cleaning products will have done so because they have noted that the cleaning product website offers good advice, so they have decided to link to the site, that’s to say they haven’t been paid.

So, our agency believes that backlinks should be earnt and not bought, if backlinks were bought then the business may incur a link penalty. An example of a link penalty would be a Penguin penalty.

We think links should be earnt, and to earn backlinks your business must offer quality advice to your businesses customers.

Why is my SEO agency stating that they need to disavow backlinks?

A business will sometimes need to disavow its backlinks, that’s if the business has accumulated low-quality backlinks.

However, we would only recommend that a white hat agency, which is a reputable marketing agency that knows what it is doing when it comes to disavowing the company’s backlinks completes this task. We say only a reputable business should disavow the backlinks simply because if the company disavows the wrong links, that’s to say some of the good quality links as well, then the business may take longer to recover from a link penalty.

A white hat marketing agency should therefore write a detailed plan of how they are going to remove the low-quality links, leave the good quality links, then have a marketing strategy for how they are going to replace the disavowed low quality links, with good quality backlinks, to improve the company’s seo.

What is Google Analytics?

If your business is going to improve its organic or local seo, then your company is going to want to know by how much the company’s seo has improved. A business can you Google Analytics, which is free and will offer your business a lot of useful information, such as your company’s bounce rate, how many organic visitors your website has obtained, also which pages, such as the company’s homepage how many organic visitors that page is getting.

What is Google My Business?

If your company here in Cardiff wants to improve its local seo, then the business will need a Google My Business account. This is very simple to set-up, you just need to enter your businesses NAP information, plus a business description and also a link to your homepage.

If your business has not got the time to set up an account, then you may wish to ask your digital marketing agency to do this for you.

Below we will mention the information that should be added, and why its important to make sure you add as much detail as you can to your businesses Google My Business account.

Add a backlink

You should add a backlink to your homepage of your website, some businesses will add a backlink to a main page on their website, such as the contact us page, yet we always recommend that your business instead adds the link to your company’s homepage.

Add company logo

You should add your company’s logo, if you haven’t got a copy of your company logo then your marketing agency should be able to send you a copy of your company’s logo.

Add opening hours

You should add your company’s opening hours, and change these if your company changes its opening hours.

Add a business description

You should add a detailed business description, we would not recommend that you copy and paste from your website, instead you should write a business description which is unique, and not copied from your main website.

Make sure that the NAP information is correct

You should make sure that the NAP information added you website is correct, and that it matches your businesses citations.

Technical SEO

It’s really important to get the technical SEO right, for example making sure that your website can be indexed.

Design

It is really important to get design of your website right, if the design is not as good as it could be, then your business may incur a high bounce rate.

Duplicated content marketing

If the text has been copied from another website, then this can cause duplication problems, which could cause a Google penalty.

Content thin

If a website’s “content thin”, meaning that each page only has a few lines of text, then this could adversely affect your businesses search engine optimisation (SEO). It’s important that your marketing company adds detailed product descriptions and also add good quality content marketing in order to improve your businesses seo.

Reduce your companies bounce rate

Your business should work hard to reduce its bounce rate.

Poor website design

Poor website design could lead to a high bounce rate.

AMP and Speed

It’s important that your businesses website loads quickly on a smart phone, if the shopper was made to wait only a few seconds more then this could increase the businesses bounce rate.

Indexation

It’s important that your website can be indexed, so that it can be displayed in Google’s results.

Mobile friendly

It’s important to make sure that the mobile version of your companies website works correctly.

Introduction

It’s a question that a lot of digital marketing agencies will get asked very frequently- that is how does they see digital marketing changing in the not too distant future?

That’s to say how does the agency see organic SEO, link building or how a business improves its local SEO changing over the next say six months?

How will Google further improve its algorithm?

That’s to say how will the algorithm change? How should websites be designed so that they help improve a company’s SEO?

What our SEO consultant’s think

Well, as we have many knowledgeable SEO consultants that work for us here at Top Space, so we thought we would put our heads together, and write a blog post on just that.

We as a digital marketing agency here in Cardiff have to be forward thinking, that’s to say we have to think how will Google’s algorithm change.

Plus, our consultants must have a good knowledge of Google’s past changes to its algorithm, that’s to say, how the Google Hummingbird update, or the Panda updates changed seo.

Then when a new business asks us to improve their SEO one of the first things that we can do is evaluate the site, to see if it flouting any white hat seo practices.

For example, a common problem that we see is when an a company approaches us, is if they sell products that the product description is normally duplicated by copying and pasting from the manufacturers website.

So, our agency will normally start be rewording product descriptions, so its sometimes not just a matter of thinking, how will Google’s algorithm change, its how can the site be made so that it adheres to white hat methods of SEO.

This is why all businesses, no matter if it’s a large business or a small business, the business must comply with Google’s Webmaster Guidelines, if the business does not comply, then the business could incur a penalty.

By incurring a penalty, a business could be “de-indexed” which means that its taken out of the index, this is why its so important that a business complies with Google’s Webmaster Guidelines.

This blog post will therefore offer our thoughts on how digital marketing may change:

Zero Clicks

Less than Half of Google Searches Now Result in a Click

Our marketing company believes that zero click results will increase this year, and your probably now thinking well, what are “zero click searches”- well, let’s say you want to purchase an electric car.

So you search “what is the best-selling electric car” and let’s say just as an example, instead of going on a bike manufactures website, instead in the SERP’s you are told that the best-selling car is made by this manufacturer, and what the model is called, and then you have the source of the information, lets say a famous motoring magazine has published that answer, but the answer is in what’s called a “knowledge panel”- so this means the answer is in the SERP’s.

So, instead of in the past you might have had a car manufacturer being able to work their way to the top of the organic results, now instead of say a car manufacturer you will have let’s say a knowledge panel, and Google taking a paragraph from say a car magazine.

So, this just means that us seo agencies, and digital marketing agencies here in Cardiff now have to work that bit harder, as the business may obtain less visitors, so it will become harder possibly to convert this visitor into paying customers.

What do we mean by this?

Well, with Knowledge Panels the answer to a question is directly within the SERP’s, so the shopper doesn’t need to read what the best-selling electric car is in different countries on say three different websites, instead it will have the answer in the SERP’s.

Obviously, a car manufacturer would much prefer if a shopper landed on their website, and read about their cars, the offers they have available and perhaps a finance deal they are offering on that brand of car.

So, if the answer to say the best-selling electric car was to appear in the SERP’s, then the shopper may bypass a few businesses, and go to whoever sells the best selling electric car, so this is one way that SEO could change more in the future.

More low-quality websites removed

There are some businesses that still do not use white hat seo, a lot of businesses will have been removed through the Google Panda and Penguin updates, yet we believe even more algorithm updates are going to be implemented, which means more businesses removed because they have not used white hat seo.

At our agency we only use white hat methods, yet there are still a lot of businesses that do not use white hat methods.

So one way that we see seo changing is for more and more businesses that flout the rules, such as by building low-quality backlinks to be removed.

However, we also see websites which are too focused on just improving their SEO to be removed as well.

And what do we mean by that?

Well, we think that the best digital marketing agencies will make their clients websites a useful website for the business’s customers.

So for example, lets say that your business sells power tools, the marketing agency may well offer a lot of free DIY advice on their website.

And you may say well, what’s the point in giving away free advice?

Well, its because that business may earn a lot of high-quality backlinks, so the business may rank higher on Google, and that’s because the website offers quality advice in relation to power tools and DIY.

Now if the power tool company was to hire the wrong agency, lets say the marketing company said that the business should write “power tools” and “drills” and “electric screwdrivers” over and over again, and place these words in a repetitive way then this will cause a penalty.

So, its really important that you hire a white hat agency, that’s to say that you hire a company that follows Google’s Webmaster Guidelines.

As a business that doesn’t will get hit by an algorithmic penalty, and if they don’t get hit straightaway by a penalty, then they are likely to incur one in the future.

Greater focus on quality

We believe that the businesses that will rank the highest are the businesses that offer the best quality advice. We believe that more and more businesses are going to invest more into offering more advice, and less business promotional blog posts, as this will allow the business to obtain more visitors.

So many businesses have asked company’s to write blog posts for a fee to a set word count.

That’s to say, some businesses have thought that if they keep adding blog posts then this will improve their SEO.

However, as any good agency will tell you, its much better to add quality work, as if the work is “content thin”- meaning it doesn’t really have anything useful to say, its just 500 words say of complete rambling, then its this content marketing that will damage a businesses seo.

And if you were to ask our agency what will change in SEO over next say year, we would say its going to be an even more focused effort to remove businesses that keep posting content thin articles.

That’s to say al lot of businesses, from estate agents through to plumbers may have purchased articles that have been written poorly, that’s to say written to a set word count.

So just as Google clamped down on low-quality link building, we think that Google will also clamp down further on websites that post low-quality content marketing that’s “content thin” as is just aimed at trying to get the website higher for a set amount of keywords.

Now, some reading this may think, well how would Google’s algorithm know if the work is good quality or not?

And there’s a simple answer to that and it involves all of these factors:

·        Bounce rate

·        Google’s RankBrain

·        Time on site

·        Google’s Knowledge Vault

Now, it would take too much time to go into every single point here, but let’s just say this, if the website has a super high bounce rate, that’s to say the majority of the readers are leaving the page in matter of seconds, and are obviously not spending much time on the company’s website, then why would Google keep that business ranked high on Google?

The search engine will obviously want to move up a business which has a low bounce rate, which has a lot of facts on its website which it can check with Google’s Knowledge Vault, then if the website has a high time on-site figure, say over 4 minutes on average, where the other business only has a time on site figure in comparison on average of mere seconds, well, that business is likely to move up and the other website down.

So, this is where Google’s RankBrain could be used, that’s to see which businesses are best answering the query.

Introduction

It simply doesn’t matter if your working on improving a small businesses SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and that business only employs say only one person, or alternatively your working on a site that is owned by a national company that employs thousands of people- one things for sure, the work must always be white hat.

If you are unsure as to what “white hat” means, it means that the company must follow Google’s Webmaster Guidelines. If your business, or your SEO company is optimising for another search engine, then you must also follow the Webmaster Guidelines for that business as well.

If the business does not follow the Webmaster Guidelines, and white hat seo methods, then the business may incur a penalty. A penalty can normally come in one of two forms, an algorithmic penalty or a manual penalty.

Both can mean that the business drops in terms of where it ranks. So for example, lets say that you run a construction business here in Cardiff, South Wales, you may have been ranked in the top four positions in Google’s SERP’s.

Then once Googlebot and Google’s algorithm detected that you had a lot of spam backlinks, and it looks like this has been completed to try and improve your SEO, then Google will issue a penalty.

A penalty, such as a Google Penguin penalty will mean that your business can drop down the ranks.

So for instance, lets say your construction company hires the wrong SEO agency, they build what are called low-quality backlinks, then this could mean that the business incurs an algorithmic penalty.

This can sometimes mean that the business is removed from Google, but it can also mean for some businesses that the website drops in the SERP’s and sometimes it can take a long time for the business to recover.

Google has offered guidelines for how a business should undertake SEO, these guidelines are simply called the “Webmaster Guidelines”.

Yet, there’s a golden rule that all agencies must follow and that is this, the agency must implement quality work that will help the customer, and not just think about improving the businesses rankings.

So the website must follow white hat seo guidelines, plus it must also be a website that offers useful information. This means for example that the business should not just try and improve its seo by mentioning “builders” or “construction company’s” over and over again, instead the construction website should offer useful information.

So whether the agency is building backlinks, writing content marketing or simply changing the businesses meta titles and meta descriptions, all of the work must be white hat.

So what is a Google Penalty?

As you can imagine, a business that’s ranked at the top of Google will obviously attract more calls.

For example, a plumber that’s ranked #1 for say “emergency plumbers” is unlikely to be quiet.

So, if people are looking for the services or the products that your company offers, then if your business is ranked at the top of Google this is likely to help your business- that’s obvious right?

Well, yes, it is obvious- but what is much less obvious is that there are many seo agencies that are willing to cut corners, offer cheap seo prices, and bring about short term results which can later turn into a penalty.

And what do we mean by this?

Well, some businesses may for example build spam backlinks, which may sometimes for a very temporary blip in time improve where your business ranks.

Yet, as soon as Google’s algorithm deems this work as spam, and your website receives a penalty, your business could be removed from Google, which SEO’s call deindexing a website, or your website could drop down a few pages, so for example from page 1 to page 3.

40 Unbelievable SEO Statistics You Need to Know

So how does this occur?

Well, for many reasons, but generally its because the seo is low-quality, and often this is due to low-quality backlinks being built, or the content marketing being low-quality (Google Panda penalty) so for example it may contain a keyword that you want to rank for in a way where it reads as if the work is spam.

So for example, a skip hire business may mention “skip hire + name of city” over and over again, this work is likely to be deemed as spam.

Instead the marketing agency should instead focus on offering good quality advice, and this will help the businesses seo if the information is likely to help that businesses customers.

Algorithmic Penalties

Google’s algorithm can issue algorithmic penalties, so for example if the algorithm was to detect that the business is using duplicated content, then the algorithm can issue a penalty.

So for example, lets say that you run a business that sells electrical items, let’s say T.V’s, washing machines, and also microwaves.

Now your business has copied and pasted the product descriptions for every single product that you sell, and you have copied the product descriptions from the manufacturers website, well this is likely to result in your business having lower rankings.

What would be far better is for your company to work with your marketing business, and to write your own product descriptions, and to highlight the features that each product has, and if the customer is unlikely to know what it means, such as “4k television” then you could add extra information, so that the customer will know what this means.

So, if your business was to implement low-quality seo, then the algorithm may detect this, and this could mean your business incurs an algorithmic penalty, such as a Google Panda, or a Google Penguin penalty.

So all work, even right down to product descriptions must be white hat, if you are unsure how to do this then you should contact a Cardiff SEO company.

Manual Penalties

So, an algorithmic penalty is a penalty that’s issued by the algorithm, which is obviously not a real person, yet sometimes your company’s website may well be reviewed by Google, and if a Google employee deems the SEO work to be low-quality, or that your business has flouted its Webmaster guidelines, then your business may incur a manual penalty.

This is a penalty that’s issued to your business, and can also result in your business seeing its website move down the ranks, or removed from Google.

Google Panda Penalty

A really common type of penalty is the Google Panda penalty. Normally a business will incur a Panda penalty if the onsite seo is low-quality, so for example if you have used duplicated content.

So for example, lets say you hire a web designer, and they copy and paste all of the product descriptions from another website, this will result in your website having duplicate text.

This duplicated text could result in your website incurring a penalty, that’s because the work is not original.

If the work is not original, then the business could suffer from being ranked lower in the SERP’s.

So for example, lets say your about to start a business here in Cardiff, South Wales, your business will sell high end bikes and mountain bikes.

But your busy setting up your new shop, hiring staff and getting the company branding right, so when your web designer asks have you got the content marketing ready, you simply reply can you take the product descriptions directly from the bike manufactures website?

Which we would say is a bad idea, we say it’s a bad idea because even on the first crawl of Googlebot seeing the website, it will spot that the website is full of duplicated text, it will therefore deem the SEO as weak right from the very start.

So what we mean by this is Googlebot will crawl and index each page of your website, it will spot that the text, that’s the content marketing on each URL is duplicated. It will therefore deem the SEO work as low-quality right from the start.

So instead if the bike retailer come to us, we would recommend that the text is original, so that the text offers useful advice to your customers, this will take a lot longer than just copy and pasting text, yet if the business wants to improve its seo, and wants to be ranked on the first page of Google, then high-quality content marketing will be needed.

This means a copywriter at our agency would need to write each product description, yet when Googlebot then indexes our work, this work will be deemed as high-quality.

So this is why your business should avoid cheap seo prices, and low-quality work and choose an SEO agency Cardiff that will offer high-quality work.

Google Penguin Penalty

Another really common type of penalty is the Google Penguin penalty. A Google Penguin penalty is normally incurred if the business has low-quality backlinks.

Yet, fixing a Google Penguin penalty is normally a lot more complicated, this is because backlinks will need to be disavowed, new high-quality backlinks will need to be built.

High quality backlinks, which will improve your company’s seo are not easy to build, so you should only hire a high quality seo agency or company that can build backlinks in a white hat way.

Need further help:

If your business would like help to improve its seo, then why not call us?

Quite often when a business first starts up here in Cardiff they will have a bash at doing the SEO themselves.

After all, most start-ups want to keep costs down so this makes sense right?. Yet, what a lot of businesses quickly find is that they are working long hours to improve the websites SEO, yet all this effort does not seem to paying off.

That’s to say after countless cups of coffee, long nights plugging away at trying to improve the businesses seo, they sometimes find that Google Analytics still doesn’t show much improvement in terms of organic visitor numbers.

So this is when some businesses think well, search engine optimisation is not for them, when often if the work is done right, and by right we mean white hat and following Google’s Webmaster Guidelines, then SEO can help a business, sometimes becoming the company’s sole of form of advertising the business here in Cardiff.

So why wouldn’t a business’s organic visitor numbers be improving?

That’s of course if the business was investing a lot of time into improving its organic SEO?

Well, there could be a number of reasons, but our SEO experts have come up with the following points to try and help you to figure out how to improve your businesses organic seo.

Yet, before we go any further in advising how a business may go about improving their SEO, its important to remember that all work should be “white hat”- and what do we mean by that?

Well, the work must be of a good quality-if its not, then the business could incur an algorithmic or manual penalty. You’ve probably already heard about Google Panda and Google Penguin penalties, well you most definitely do not want your business to incur such a penalty.

But also, the work must adhere to Google’s Webmaster Guidelines, if your business does not, lets say a business tries to cut corners by building low-quality backlinks, then the business is likely to be hit by a penalty.

A penalty can come in one of two forms, that’s an algorithmic penalty or a manual penalty.

An example of an algorithmic penalty would be a Google Penguin penalty- many businesses will have received a Google Penguin penalty- this is often for building low-quality backlinks, so we would strongly advise that all work is white hat.

And if you’re in a bit of a rush, so you just want a bullet pointed list of the things you should improve in order to improve your company’s SEO here in Cardiff, here’s a list of some of things you should improve in a white hat way:

·        Content marketing

·        Link building

·        Meta titles, meta descriptions

·        Alt tags

·        Improve the design of your website

·        Reduce the company’s bounce rate

·        Remove duplicated text

Okay, so there just some really quick recommendations of how businesses could improve their seo, however there’s often a lot of work that’s needed every month, so we will now explain in more detail some of the areas that we improve when we work for our clients here in Cardiff, South Wales.

Is your website what us SEO’s call “content thin”?

So many businesses tell their website design business that they want a “minimalistic website”.

That’s to say they don’t want a website that has loads of text, they want the web designer to design a simpler website. A website that uses a lot of white space for example.

Yet this could cause problems to the business’s SEO if the website is overly simplistic. So, let’s say your business is a furniture business, and you sell handcrafted tables and chairs mostly.

Okay, so your website has loads of pictures of the chairs and tables, and then just a brief sentence which states the name of the table and chairs such as “industrial looking table, made from reclaimed scaffolding boards” and then the website just mentions a price.

Well, that may look good in terms of keeping that page uncluttered, but it doesn’t really help the businesses SEO.

Googlebot which is what is used to index each page, that’s by crawling and indexing your company’s website will need to read some text, as otherwise how will it know that the page is about table and chairs?

So Googlebot is used to crawl and index the page, if the page is what SEO’s refer to as being “content thin”, which is often the case with a minimalist style website, then Googlebot may know what the page is about.

For example, a line of text to describe a product, then a picture of the product and a price is not much to go off.

Instead we would recommend the following:

·        A full product description as wordy as possible

·        Real customer reviews

·        Product specification

·        No duplicated text

As any good Cardiff seo company will tell you, a content thin page can mean it becomes very hard work in terms of improving the websites seo. Simply put Googlebot will have nothing to read, so a competitor’s business which offers much better information, more detail in terms of the products that the company sells, well that businesses SEO is likely to be a lot stronger.

So instead work needs to be done to improve the products description, and to also add onsite seo, so to add meta titles, meta descriptions, alt tags and internal links.

Here’s how we would improve the onsite seo for some businesses:

·        Add white hat content marketing

·        Add meta title

·        Add meta description

·        Make sure all work is white hat

·        Add alt tags

·        Add anchor text

·        Add blog posts

·        Redesign poorly designed websites, such as a one-page website

And your white hat seo agency should recommend ways that all product pages could be improved. If this is done right- and what we mean by right is using white hat methods, then your businesses organic seo could be improved.

You should then use a good SEO tool, such as Ahrefs or Google Analytics and Google Search Console, this is to track if your businesses organic seo is improving.

Backlinks

Ask any seo consultant that’s worth their salt what they think one of the most important parts of the SEO process is, and they are bound to say backlinks. That’s to say when various agencies are asked what is considered one of the most important ranking factors, backlinks are often considered as the most important ranking factor.

Then some agencies will say the second most important is the quality of the content marketing, and then the third most important some agencies will say is Google’s “RankBrain”- which uses AI.

Yet with that said, this is also where so many businesses start to build backlinks incorrectly. That’s to say the business may hire a really rubbish seo agency, that may build the wrong backlinks, and then the business may get a penalty. So make sure you hire the right marketing agency here in Cardiff, South Wales.

The problem with low-quality backlinks

If Googlebot spots that your business has low-quality backlinks, and the algorithm spots that the links are low-quality the business could incur an algorithmic penalty, which when it comes to backlinks will often result in a Google Penguin penalty.

Also the business may incur a manual penalty, as any good SEO consultant will tell you, if a business does incur a penalty, then this can mean that the business will see its rankings drop, so for example the business may move from page 1 to say page 10 of Google’s results.

Also because the business has had a penalty placed on the website, it may take a business a very long time to recover from the penalty. Often a specialist agency is needed, that’s to fix the problems with the company’s SEO.

This is why its crucial that whichever Cardiff SEO agency that you do choose, that you choose a business which builds links in the following way:

·        White hat

·        Follows Google’s Webmaster Guidelines

·        Must only build only quality backlinks

So, it’s absolutely crucial that all backlinks are built in a white hat way.

If you are in any doubt as to how to build backlinks in a white hat way, then, we would most definitely recommend that you speak to a respected seo agency- like us!

As most SEO consultants will tell you, there’s over 200 ranking signals which Google’s algorithm will take into account, that’s when working out how strong the company’s SEO is.

Although there are over 200 ranking signals, backlinks are still widely considered to be one of the most important.

This means if you run a business here in Cardiff, and your company website has a lot of really good quality backlinks that are built in a white hat way, then this is likely to significantly improve your company’s SEO.

However, signals such as let’s say a meta descriptions are considered by some to be much less important.

Penalty

Okay so we don’t want to alarm you too much! Yet as earlier mentioned in this article, if you’ve hired an seo company that doesn’t use white hat methods, well your website could incur a penalty.

Also, if you run a business, and you’ve decided to complete the work inhouse, then you have to make sure every aspect of the work is white hat.

A common mistake that a lot of businesses make here in Cardiff is to think that the business that is ranked at the top of Google can have their SEO replicated, for example if they have 2000 backlinks that is the number that the competing business should aim for.

However, it all boils down to one thing, and that is quality, the business may accrue 2000 backlinks,

So, for example, if the seo company uses duplicated work, so let’s say they have copied product descriptions directly from the manufactures website, well this could trigger a penalty.

Such a penalty would be a Google Panda penalty, and this may well be the reason that the businesses number of organic visitors has dropped.

So, if the number of organic visitors has dropped all of sudden, well you do have to think about whether or not your website may have obtained a penalty.

Blog posts

A vast number of businesses add blog posts to their website to help attract more organic visitors.

Now to some business owners the idea of giving away information for free may seem like a waste of time, however it is often not.

And here’s why- let’s say you run a dental practice, and your dental practice has traditionally just focused on looking after the teeth of NHS patients, yet now you would like your dental practice to branch out into cosmetic dentistry.

So your website designer add some new pages to your website, one for teeth whitening and one for teeth straightening.

But you notice that you are not getting any calls for these new services, so you ask an seo agency for help.

Now an seo company may recommend adding blog posts about teeth whitening and teeth straightening to your website.

For example, there is likely to be common questions that people will have about teeth whitening for instance, so if you answer these questions via the use of blog posts, well, you are likely to be helping to increase the number of organic visitors that your business can get.

Introduction

So, you’ve just launched your new business here in Cardiff, South Wales, you’ve had your brand-new WordPress website built, and now you’re looking for a local SEO company to implement white hat work.

However, you may have friends in business that have hired various seo companies in the past, and they may have been less than happy with the results that they have received from their agencies.

So you decide that you want to hire a local marketing agency, but you want to make sure that their reporting is up to scratch.

This means that the marketing company your going to hire must be able to offer reports which clearly show how well the businesses SEO is doing.

Now, if your in a bit of a rush, and you just want an answer to what our agency reports on each month, then take a look at the bullet points below, as we report on most of these for our clients:

·        Number of organic visitors (Google Analytics data)

·        Number of backlinks

·        Bounce rate

·        Time on site

·        What work we have implemented

·        Number or organic visitors compared with previous months to show improvement

·        A comment from the SEO consultant that’s managing that account

So as you can see our agency offers transparent reporting, this is why many businesses here in Cardiff hire us, that’s because we don’t send reports with hundreds of pages, and the data means nothing.

Instead we take our data from leading SEO tools, we only extract the data that really matters, so for example, if a business is paying us to improve the company’s to improve the companies SEO.

So after Google has used Googlebot to crawl and index our site, so by that we mean we try and implement our work well before month end, at least a few days, this is so Googlebot has a chance to crawl and index the website.

Once Googlebot has had a chance to crawl and index the website, we can start to get very accurate data in our Google Analytics account, our AHrefs account and our Google Search Console account as well.

This data is normally very up to date, normally there’s only a day’s lag, so as soon as the month ends we are able to send out an seo report to the businesses in Cardiff, South Wales that we work with, and they will be able to know how the website has improved in terms of organic visitors, bounce rate and number of backlinks, and quality of the backlinks.

Yet for a lot of businesses here in Wales, they will not have invested in SEO before, that’s to say they may not know what all these various terms mean, that’s to say they may not know what organic visitor numbers means, or bounce rate or even what quality backlinks mean.

So in order to help you to figure out what all of this means, our SEO agency has written a description for what each SEO metric means.

Organic traffic

If you hire an agency like Top Space, which specialise in “organic seo”, then your business is going to want to know how many organic visitors your website is getting.

Now let’s say your in Cardiff and you want to find a dog walking service, so you simply type “local dog walking service”- now normally at the top you will have PPC adds, which are at the top of the screen, this means businesses have paid Google to advertise their business there.

Then, because you are looking for a local business, you may see a map of where you live, often this will be as close as it can be to your house, so say if you live in Cardiff Bay, you may see more businesses that are located nearer Cardiff Bay, then you will see the map, and sometimes two or three businesses are listed there.

For businesses to appear there, sometimes they will have paid a digital marketing company to help them to rank there, for example the marketing agency may:

·        Build backlinks

·        Build business citations

·        Make sure the website has NAP information on the website

·        Make sure that the businesses don’t have any conflicting NAP information

·        Make sure that the onsite seo is improved

·        Adding meta titles

·        Adding meta descriptions

·        Adding alt tags

·        Obtaining business reviews

·        Optimising the businesses Google My Business listing

Yet, as most Cardiff SEO company will tell you, the map listings, sometimes referred to as local seo is quite different from organic SEO.

And why do we say that?

Well that’s because with local SEO sometimes there’s only two or three businesses that are shown next to the map.

Plus, which businesses get displayed can be dependent on where you are, so for example, lets say you live in Cardiff Bay, and you use an Android smartphone, and you want Google to know your location, so your location data is switched on, well Google will personalise your results, so that the businesses you want are local, that’s to say the businesses that will get shown are businesses that are based in Cardiff Bay.

But what if your business what’s to be displayed in the bulk of the results, that’s to say the organic business results?

Well, this is when an SEO agency like Top Space is needed that specialises in organic seo, we can do the following work:

·        Build high-quality backlinks

·        Disavow low-quality backlinks

·        Add content marketing

·        Add meta titles

·        Add meta descriptions

·        Remove duplicated content marketing

·        Improve thin pages

·        Build business citations

Then the digital marketing agency can start to improve the businesses organic SEO.

So, for example, let’s say your business is paying a digital marketing agency to improve your online marketing, so you may well be paying for PPC, organic seo and social media advertisements.

Which means as the business owner, or the manager of the marketing department, your going to want to know how well your agency is doing.

So, for example, let’s say you are an online clothing retailer, your going to want to know how many visitors are coming to your website via PPC, how many via organic business listings, how many through your social media adverts.

So, a marketing agency like Top Space, will often use SEO tools, such as Google Analytics, that’s to see how are visitors getting to your company’s website.

We will use AHrefs and Google Analytics to monitor exactly how many organic visitors your website is getting every month.

We will then compare this with previous months in our SEO reports so that our clients can see the improvement that has been made.

This is why many businesses choose us to be their Cardiff SEO agency, that’s because our SEO reports are easy to understand, and we only report on the really important metrics such as organic visitor numbers, bounce rate, backlinks and how long the average shopper is spending on your website.

Bounce rate

How high is your businesses bounce rate?

Not sure what the term “bounce rate” means?

Well, quite simply put your websites bounce rate, or the bounce rate for a page on your website is calculated by how many visitors landed on that page, then left your website without visiting another page.

So, let’s say that your business sells bikes, and you have spent a lot of money on making sure that you offer really good advice on your blog, for example helping people to pick the right electric bike.

So, as the business owner your going to want to know whether people are bouncing off the blog, or are they then using an internal link, by clicking on the anchor text within the article, and then looking at the products that you sell.

If your website has a high bounce rate, then your web developer and your SEO agency should be working together to try and reduce your businesses bounce rate.

Rankings

Now this is the most obvious one that you would expect a marketing agency to monitor that is your businesses rankings.

So, for example, if you run a local construction business here in Cardiff, how high does your business rank for “builders + Cardiff”?

Now, here’s where you as the business owner have to be a bit careful, as sometimes some marketing agencies will try and pull the wool over your eyes, that’s by saying we got you on the first page for this term, but what you have to ask is how many people are looking for businesses using that term.

We call this the “search volume” for a term, so for example, there will be terms that many thousands if not millions of people type to find a business like yours, so for example a very competitive term is likely to be “bed retailers”, or “mattress retailers”- now this may have over 10,000 searches a month, so a high search volume.

So your SEO agency should then target that term, but some may not, that’s because there will be a mass of other businesses doing that, so the SEO company knows it will take years to rank for that term.

So what does the seo company do instead?

Well some may try and get the business to rank for say “luxurious mattresses which can be delivered the next day”- and the SEO business may succeed in getting that business onto the first page of Google for that term- but what’s the point if it has no search volume, meaning no one is searching for it, so that’s right it’s a waste of time, yet some agencies may say they have succeeded in getting your business onto the first page, but its an empty success.

So for example, lets say you run a hairdressing saloon, and you want your business to be on the first page for “hairdressers + name of city”- but your seo consultant comes back and says, well we got you on the first page for “local hairdressers that offer affordable prices”- well that’s probably not going to be much use at all, that’s because no one is likely to be searching that neither.

So, your marketing company should concentrate on getting your business on the first page for keywords that will result in more clicks, and more customers that are likely to call your company.

How fast the website loads (Page Speed)

Is your website fast?

If your company’s website is not fast, and instead the customer is left waiting for your website to load, well your businesses seo is likely to suffer.

So, your marketing agency should work with you to make sure that the website loads quickly.

How long is the average customer spending on your website?

Let’s say that you sell men’s shoes, and you sell many hundreds of different types of men’s shoes.

You as the business owner will want to keep the shopper shopping for as long as possible, as if the shopper only looks at one pair of shoes, then leaves, well this could be an indication that the website has not offered a good service.

For example, perhaps its not easy to sort by colour of shoe, style of shoe, or perhaps there’s not enough information, such as whether or not the item is in stock, and well be delivered let’s say within 5 days.

So, your business should work with your website designer and your seo company to reduce the businesses bounce rate, plus keep your shoppers shopping for as long as possible, to increase the chances of your company making a sale.

It’s widely thought by many digital marketing agencies that if your website has a very high bounce rate, and low time on site well this could indicate that your business is not answering the question of someone looking for say “brown leather shoes”- so this is when your business could move down the ranks.

A business that has a lower bounce rate, and is able to keep shoppers shopping for longer, well this website may move up the ranks.

How we can help

If your business requires a new website or organic seo then why not call us?

Most digital marketing agencies up and down the U.K add blog posts to their website on a regular basis, often these SEO related blog posts detail quite complicated things that a business owner can do to improve their online marketing.

For example, one week the business may well be talking about how to build high-quality backlinks, then the next week on how Google’s RankBrain could change how us SEO’s implement white hat seo.

So, this got us thinking, surely its time for a blog post that returns back to the simpler forms of onsite seo?

The type of seo that business owners of Britain could implement themselves, that’s if they were to follow white hat methods.

So without further do, here’s 4 ways you can improve your businesses onsite seo

However, before we do start its important to remember that you should follow Google’s Webmaster Guidelines, or if you are optimising your business for another search engine, such as Bing, then you should follow their advice.

We say that because a lot of businesses here in Cardiff, South Wales where our SEO agency is based, and other businesses based all across the U.K and the world for that matter can sometimes implement low-quality SEO.

And this can mean that Googlebot can spot the low-quality SEO work, it will then inform the algorithm and this can mean that a business incurs a penalty, penalties fall broadly into two categories, they are algorithmic penalties, and manual penalties.

If a business was to incur a penalty, such as an algorithmic penalty, that’s because let’s say the SEO company built low-quality backlinks, then this can mean that the company drops down pages, or sometimes the business can be removed from Google.

So, this is why if you are going to implement SEO yourself, that your business follows white hat methods, plus if you are unsure, you should consult with a respected white hat SEO agency.

There are many seo companies to choose from here in Cardiff, however do make sure that you do find a white hat seo agency.

So, without further ado, here’s four ways a business here in Wales could improve their organic SEO.

#1 Meta titles and meta descriptions

It’s so easy to write a blog post but then forget to add a meta title or a meta description right at the end. Yet, as any good marketing company will tell you a well written meta title and meta description can improve your businesses click through rate (CTR).

So, for example, let’s say your business sells candles, but not just any candles these are your luxurious candles, the ones you see in interior design magazines.

Now the actual candles that your looking to purchase are bees wax candles, yet when your looking for a business that sells such candles, well, none leap out from the page and state they sell such candles.

Yet there’s one business, this business has employed a good seo consultant, so they’ve got a meta titles and meta descriptions are descriptive, and one reads like this:

Meta title: 100% natural bees wax candles, made right here in the U.K, plus free delivery!

Meta description: We make our bees wax candles from 100% pure bees wax. Plus, if you order today, we are offering free delivery for a limited time only!

Now as you may agree this is quite a persuasive meta title and meta description, so if you see this business appear in the SERP’s (search engine results pages) well, it may just persuade you to click on the business.

What you have to remember is which ever Cardiff SEO company you employ, when they get your company on the first page of Google, for say “beeswax candles”- well you still have to compete normally with 10 other businesses which are also ranked in the SERP’s, plus there will most likely be PPC adds, and there might even be a local business, one which you can walk or drive to locally to purchase bees wax candles.

So, as you can see, even when the SEO agency has your business on the first page, you still have to compete with a lot of other businesses, so this is why the company should write a meta title and a meta description which will make shoppers click on your business rather than a rival business.

So for example, it could be something as simple as offering free delivery, or mentioning a brand that you stock, as that may well be what the shopper is looking for, for example a certain brand of candle.

#2 Alt tags

Here’s another ranking signal that a lot of seo agencies forget to talk about, that’s to say often alt tags are not discussed by some marketing agencies, preferring to talk about link building for example.

Yet we think alt tags are important, and here’s why, for most businesses they now face more competition than ever, so yes the crucial parts of seo are important such as links and content marketing, but also its more important than ever to think about how all the less important ranking signals can be optimised, as this may just give your business an edge over some of your rivals.

And one way you may wish to improve your businesses seo is to use alt tags. So, for those that do not know what alt tags are, they are simply a description of what that picture is about.

So, for example, let’s say your business sells 100% organic cotton t-shirts, and there will be people looking to purchase such t-shirts.

So, if the t-shirt’s alt tag was labelled “black V-neck t-shirt, made from 100% organic cotton”- well this would be a great way of improving that pages seo, as it makes it easier for people to find a 100% organic cotton t-shirt.

Why does it make the t-shirt easier to find?

That’s because Googlebot, which Google uses to crawl and index the web will spot that the product has an alt tag, and it will read the alt tag, for example organic cotton t-shirt.

It will then spot that your business sells organic cotton t-shirts.

So if the seo agency then supports this seo work by building high-quality backlinks, and improving all the other seo signals in a white hat way, then writing these alt tags is just another way that the business can improve its seo.

Granted, there are over 200 seo signals, and alt tags are well down the list, that’s in terms of how important alt tags are when improving a businesses seo, however with that said, when your selling thousands of different products, and you have hundreds if not thousands of other businesses as competitors, then every thing you can do to improve your seo will count to your companies advantage.

#3 Blog

Whether you’re a dentist running a dental practice in a busy city, or you make handcrafted tables in the countryside, we think its really important to have a company blog.

And what we mean by blog is to add high-quality, well-written blog posts to your website.

And here’s a top tip, make sure your blog posts are useful-what do we mean by useful?

Well, all too often seo agencies and businesses write content marketing because that they think will improve their businesses seo, however, all too often the work does not offer any real use to anyone.

So, for example, it may well just be 500 words written about tables which do not really offer any useful information to anyone at all.

But how about an article that describes how to make an eco-friendly table, for example how to make a scaffolding board table, from recycled scaffolding boards.

Okay, so we know what you’re thinking, you’re thinking why would a business give this advice away for free? Well let us explain.

There may well be say 1000 businesses that also make tables from used scaffolding boards, yet if your business publishes an article that explains how to make such a table, well many people may share a link on social media.

Then as more and more people read this article they may choose to link to the article, then when they link to the article your business may obtain more and more backlinks.

If the backlinks are of good quality then this may help your businesses seo, so then by giving away this advice for free what you’ve actually done is help to improve your own companies seo. That’s if your business does obtain good quality backlinks.

Which means that your business may now be selling more recycled scaffolding board tables.

Yet, with that said the backlinks must be good quality if they are to help your businesses seo, plus all of the work must be white hat.

#4 Bounce rate

Your digital marketing agency or your business should be monitoring your businesses bounce rate.

You can use Google Analytics to monitor your businesses bounce rate, so you don’t need an expensive SEO tool, as Google Analytics is free.

The reason for monitoring your company’s bouncer rate is if a large percentage of your visitors are leaving your companies website straightaway then should prompt your business to look at why.

Why are so many shoppers leaving your website?

It’s just the same concept as if you were to open a shop in the middle of Cardiff’s city centre, and in the first week, you see people walk in your shop, then leave after a few seconds, you would want to know why- why are so many shoppers leaving the shop?

So let’s say for example your business sells bespoke handmade furniture online, yet 90% of the businesses visitors are leaving the website straightaway.

Well, your digital marketing agency may recommend that the product descriptions are changed, so for example more detail is offered about the product, this may then reduce the bounce rate to say 60%, then the business adds a video for each and every product, this way the customer can get a much better idea of what each piece of furniture looks like.

Then the bounce rate drops to 20% on average across the site, so what we mean by this is your seo agency should be looking at all the different ways your business could reduce its bounce rate.

Does your business need help improving with your white hat seo? If so then why not give us a call?

Introduction

In todays fast paced world most of us expect to get what we pay for quickly. So, whether that’s a brand-new smartphone that you may have just purchased online, or say a take-away that’s just been ordered through an app- we all expect to get out items as quick as possible.

So with this mindset some business owners think that this is possible when investing in organic seo, to obtain results quickly.

But how realistic is that?

Well, we wouldn’t be the only white hat SEO agency to say often its not possible.

Sure some agencies will promise the earth, and everything that is in it, but often organic SEO is a slow process, and we will explain why:

Your competitors will have already set the standard

So lets say that you run a construction business here in Cardiff, yet you’ve just started the business, yet you want to gain those high value contracts, the ones that the businesses in Cardiff have been obtaining for many years.

Yet, with that said, those businesses may have been investing in white hat organic seo for many years.

So this means that they will have a head-start.

This means that when Google’s algorithm crawls and indexes those websites, they will spot that they have strong ranking signals, over 200 signals, that’s why most of the time these businesses are on the first page of Google.

So, this means that not only will your business have to be working on improving your SEO to a greater amount than that business this month, but you have to catch-up with all the work that the business has done over the last say 8 years.

This is why SEO company’s like Top Space will charge a fee based on how strong your competitors are.

Google’s algorithm

Google’s algorithm is very sophisticated, it uses AI technology, through Google’s RankBrain, plus it uses over 200 “ranking factors” or as some SEO consultants call them “ranking signals” in order to work out how strong your businesses seo is.

Now, some businesses here in Cardiff, and right across the U.K will try and cheat the algorithm, but this is not a good idea, its more than likely going to result in the business obtaining a penalty.

For example the business may incur a Google Panda, or a Google Penguin penalty.

So, the algorithm rewards businesses that implement quality seo, which often referred to as being white hat.

Googlebot

Here’s why organic seo often takes such a long time to see results, some businesses think that it is just a matter of adding more blog posts, or obtaining more quality backlinks, but it is not.

Most digital marketing agencies, ours included strongly believe that Google’s algorithm wants to see work being added over a long timeframe.

That’s to say that its not just a matter of beating the current standard, that’s set by another company, no its also a matter of slowly feeding the work to the website, and building backlinks.

We think that doing a mass of work to try and catch up with the competition in a very short window of time, this is often a marketing strategy that fails.

Instead the work must be high-quality, yet it must be added over a long time frame.

This is so when Googlebot crawls and indexes the website, each week, or each month the algorithm notices slight improvements, over time you can then start to catch-up with your competitors here in Cardiff.

Crawling and indexing

Your web design company, and your SEO agency should make sure that Google can crawl and index your website.

If your website cannot be crawled or indexed, lets say for example the “no-index” tab was left on, then this can mean that it will slow the entire seo process down.

Sandbox period

Here’s another factor that not many businesses know, that is when they have a website built, because the website is brand new, that’s to say the domain name has just been registered, it means that the SEO process can be a lot slower, this means that the website may enter what many SEO consultants refer to as the “sandbox period”.

Cant be rushed

So now you may be starting to gather that organic seo cannot be rushed, if it is, the website could go backwards.

By rushed, we mean that some businesses simply get very impatient, they are not happy to pay an SEO agency to only move forwards say 4 places each month.

Instead every month they may want to jump a page, yet for a business to move a page forwards, the business may start to cut corners, by making mistakes like writing a keyword they want to rank for in meta titles, meta descriptions, alt tags, titles, content marketing, anchor text, in a way which may read unnaturally.

And this often results in the business incurring a penalty, and not moving forwards, but in matter of fact being removed or moving back down the ranks.

200 ranking signals

Here’s the thing, some businesses think that SEO is all about adding blog posts, and building backlinks, but there’s a lot more to it than that, most digital marketing agencies think there are over 200 ranking factors.

This simply means that Google’s algorithm is thought to take into account over 200 ranking signals.

Here are just a few of those ranking signals:

  • Website speed- how fast is your company’s website?
  • Bounce rate
  • Time spent on your company’s website
  • Schema
  • Business citations
  • NAP citations consistent?
  • What’s the quality of the backlinks like?
  • H1-H6 tags
  • Meta titles
  • Meta description
  • Alt tags
  • Internal links
  • Anchor text

And this is to name just a few, as stated earlier there’s thought to be over 200 signals.

No shortcuts

As you can gather, there’s no shortcuts, and if a business does use a shortcut, then its more than likely that the business will incur a penalty.

So for example, let’s say that your business tries to build backlinks quickly, by buying low-quality links, then the business is more than likely to receive a Google Penguin penalty.

So there’s  no shortcuts, the only method to get your website onto the first page of Google, and for your business to be ranked in the organic results, is to invest time or money into white hat seo.

Google penalties

It’s worth mentioning here that its not just businesses that implement seo themselves that can hit by a penalty.

Sometimes a business will ask an SEO company to implement seo, but sometimes seo agencies get it wrong.

Sometimes they charge such a low price that they cut corners, this again can result in a penalty, such as a Panda penalty.

Every aspect must be focused on quality

Every aspect of the work must be white hat.

Quality really does matter

You will always have those seo companies that offer their services at a really cheap price, and also promise that they can get your business onto the first page of Google.

However, as a business owner you have to think, well, how realistic is that?

This is especially the case if your business operates in a competitive business sector.

So, for example let’s say the business that you run is a dental practice, well normally this is a competitive business sector.

So, if the businesses that you are competing against are spending upwards of say £2000.00 a month on seo, and have been doing so for a very long time, well you have to ask yourself what can your business achieve if its only paying a fraction of this?

Of course, it’s difficult to evaluate what your competitors are spending on seo, but if the work is really good quality then they may be spending a lot of money.

So, in a nutshell, often if a business is offering SEO at really cheap prices, well, they have to be cutting corners somewhere. And, if the seo company is cutting corners, well this could mean that the business they are working for incurs a penalty.

For example, if the seo agency builds backlinks in a way which isn’t white hat, well the business in question could incur a Google Penguin penalty.

So quality matters.

The competition often set the standard

Some business owners do believe that as soon as they invest in SEO their business should appear on the first page of Google, that’s to say the business should appear within the organic business results.

However, before that can happen a business will need to have stronger seo than the businesses that are currently on the first page.

So, this is why the competition set the standard to beat, its also worth bearing in mind that sometimes the standard is set very high indeed.

So, for example, a business may have thousands of good quality backlinks for example, and just to beat the businesses that do have these links, well often that takes a great deal of time.

Does this mean there are no shortcuts?

There are not shortcuts, instead a business must focus on quality. The reason that this is so important that is if a business uses low-quality seo methods, well the business could incur a penalty.

For example, a Google Panda or Google Penguin penalty. However, its worth bearing this in mind also, that is if a business does find a shortcut, an SEO method it can use to its advantage, that is not white hat, well what’s to say that the business will not incur a penalty in the future?

So, we always recommend to all clients that white hat seo is the only method to use.

Marketing budgets

Here’s the thing that constrains many businesses, that is their marketing budget. Sometimes a website will require so much SEO work, that’s to catch up with the standard that the competition have, that it all boils down to money.

The really experienced seo consultants, and link builders, well often these can cost a lot of money, so often its this that will slow the seo process down.

Need a strategy

Because some businesses may well be spending many thousands, if not millions on SEO its really important that any business has a clear marketing strategy.

That marketing strategy should focus on which words and phrases the SEO strategy should focus on.

Plus, your marketing agency should be clear whether its even possible to rank for certain words and phrases.

For example, the term “car insurance” is a hyper-competitive term, and therefore many businesses are likely to be spending large sums of money for their business to be placed on the first page.

So if a business has a relatively small marketing budget in comparison, well, the marketing agency should be clear whether or not its even possible to get the business onto the first page for that term.

Slow process

So as you can see organic seo is normally a slow process, yet with that said our clients, and many other businesses that have invested in good quality organic seo have reaped the benefits that this form of marketing can bring.

So if your business would like to find out more about organic seo, well why not give us a ring?
